Dear Mr. Lehrhoff:

Thank you for your positive response to my article. Charlie's progress has been a true testament to the collaborative work that parents and staff do help students manage those difficult transitions.

Thanks Mary for the comment! One of the goals of our work at Sage Day is to strengthen one's own feelings of self-efficacy - this goes hand in hand with developing a can do attitude. Of course, this is a process and part of what we believe is that true success comes from a can do attitude that also realizes the benefits of a healthy reliance on others. Many people feel that can do attitude and being able to operate in isolation is the ultimate goal - quite often that is the source of a problem.

John, This is so right on! I find that my own children have had issues dealing with the learning of coping skills. This is not something a parent can pass on. It has to be learned by the individual or built as you put it. You have to be the architect of your own growth and work on these changes as you do everything in life. A solid can do attitude from parents is very helpful. At least that's my strategy with my own children. I keep at the forefront of my own life a saying from Louise Hay who said: "The point of power is today." This basically means everyday you can start over again to build on your personal power and work towards achieving new goals.
